Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club (often referred to as The Castle Club) was founded in 1888 and was originally known as “The Racquet Club”. It was originally situated in Westgate Street at what is now the Welsh Rugby Union souvenir shop. The tennis club moved to its present location in the grounds of Cardiff Castle in 1923, and in 1947 when the Marquis of Bute handed over the Castle, Bute Park and other sections of land to the citizens of Cardiff, he ensured the preservation of the tennis club by granting it a 999 year lease.

With a recently refurbished and modernised clubhouse, 11 floodlit courts, its picturesque yet central location and extensive car parking, it is easy to see why Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club is regarded as the finest tennis club in Wales and beyond.

As you would expect from the number one tennis club in Wales, a lot of our socialising is informal and revolves around tennis through participation in teams, practice nights, box league, club mix-ins, club championships and tournaments

However, given our large membership base and resources we are able to supplement the informal social side of the club by holding a number of organised social events which are popular and well attended ranging from local bands and comedians to quiz nights, discos, curry evenings, barbeques and hog roasts. Committee

One of the things that differentiates Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club is that it is a private members club run for tennis players by tennis players. Our committee are all keen tennis players who also happen to have the administrative, organisational, commercial, business and financial skills necessary to run the club efficiently and effectively for its members.

The Club is also twinned with French counterpart DonBosco Tennis Club in Nantes. This initiative, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Wales, will provide tennis, language and cultural benefits to the members of both clubs through a regular exchange programme.
