Mid season report
Well good morning boxleaguers. I usually send my summary out after the weekend but I thought I would mix it up a bit this time in the hope that the combination of this email plus the prospect of a dry weekend will spur the more tardy (you know who you are!!!) boxleaguers into action!!!
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Notoriously slow to get started usually but on this occasion the younger members of this elite band have pleasantly surprised me by playing a match without too much nagging so well done to Champions League debutant Meryl who beat boxleague veteran Brandon. Still waiting for the heavyweights of this league to grace us with their presence!!!
EUROPA
On the West side Rhod beat Aeron over 3 sets in what many people were predicting to be the match of this boxleague and they didn’t disappoint. The two Jon’s seem to have gone AWOL at the moment!! Over in the EAST Ken has lost 5 straight box league matches and now needs to beat Dave Broad, when he awakes from hibernation that is, to have any prospect of avoiding relegation!!
BUNDESLIGA
The WEST side story (oh come on that was funny!!) is all about Nick Miles who has already trounced everyone in his box to secure promotion. Richard, Chris and Martin are now in a relegation battle and we would all be lying if we said we weren’t secretly hoping it will be one of those two cocky barristers who faced the drop!! On the EAST Chris Evans has surprised a few people – not by beating Brian and John Cowell but by managing to access a computer and post results!! One more win against Rhian will guarantee promotion. Relegation is a 3 way fight now between Brian, John and Rhian
LA LIGA
Not any action on the WEST which includes me but in my defence I do have two matches arranged and I know Jon and Stephen do too so it’s just the judge that is letting the side down over here really honest!! Even though my matches are arranged it’s a very curious and somewhat unsettling feeling to have played less matches than Alex Greenwood and Dai Griffin…..it’s like there is a new world order emerging!! Pete Clue played two boxleague matches in a day again which backfired spectacularly AGAIN as he lost to Rod and Peter putting himself right into the relegation spotlight. However, Stephen has an injury which might mean he can’t play his fixtures so Pete Clue may well live to fight another day in La Liga (Jammy git!!!)
PREMIER
The WEST is looking really interesting with Rob beating Paul, Ivan beating Rob and then Paul beating Ivan so now it’s up to Buddug to play her 3 matches and determine relegation and promotion here with the
PLAYOFFS lurking for the bottom TWO here remember!! On the EAST side Jon FL extends his winning streak to five on the bounce now. He needs to play Gareth in a promotion decider. Val and Graham will be in the PLAYOFFS.
PLAYOFFS
Remember nobody stays in the PLAYOFFS so it’s two up and two down. As it stands everyone could go either way. We just need Elin and Matthew Fry to play some matches.
CHAMPIONSHIP
In the WEST just one match played which was the long running battle between Dai and Kim with bragging rights going to Dai on this occasion. In the EAST there are calls for Marion to have a drugs test as she extends her winning streak to 5 beating Alex and Ben with just Aled between her and a second successive promotion.
DIVISION 1
In the WEST spurred on by narrowly avoiding relegation seasonal favourite Paul Rudolph has played two matches already with both going to 3 sets, winning one (against the previously unbeaten John Hamilton) and losing the other (against Arfon). On the EAST just one match played with Andrew beating Peter in straight sets. Overall too early to call relegation or promotion at this level.
DIVISION 2
Vlad on the EAST and Jo on the WEST have both announced themselves as serious promotion candidates with 2 wins a piece but still a long way to go on both these boxes yet with Daniel still to get off the mark.
DIVISION 3
Quite a lot of action at this level and remember TWO go down here. In the WEST there is only one match left to play. Patrick is top on 7 points but Gafyn on 6 points still has to play Alex. Jane is relegated already and anything other than a win for Alex will mean he will join her. A win for Alex will mean three players on 7 points so it will come down to set and game differences. On the EAST Chris Waymouth wins his 5th successive boxleague match since he joined but the scores suggest he is not having it all his own way as he did last season. Cathy Tong where are you??????
DIVISION 4
Only one match played in the WEST with Fiona beating Clare last weekend. On the EAST Rossi looks like she will take one of the two promotion spots but who will be joining her is hard to predict as Richie the Fire still hasn’t played any matches.
Well that’s it for now. Please get out there and play. Also, please send in your profile photos to Alex@cltcboxleague.co.uk. We are looking to get some publicity around the boxleague and we want the website to look its best for this so please just do a little bit to help us. Thanks
