Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club is enjoying a formidable 2014 with their best junior players bringing home trophies following a season of national summer tournaments and many of the club’s teams winning their respective summer leagues.

The club’s junior teams dominated this year’s South Wales Aegon competition by winning their respective leagues in 10&U Mixed, 12&U Girls, 12&U Boys, 14&U Boys and 16&U Boys with many of the same players also winning titles in Torquay, Bournemouth, Swansea, Penarth, Gwent, and Cardiff Open tournaments.

Located within the grounds of Cardiff Castle, the club proudly hosted the annual Welsh Junior Championships again and successfully had 11 club members compete in numerous finals. Meryl Bird won the Ladies singles, Tiarnan Brady won the 18&U Boys doubles and finally Meryl and Poppy Davies took home the 18&U Girls doubles title.

As well as nurturing the up and coming juniors, club tennis continues to be a hugely competitive aspect of Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club and the men’s first team continued their winning streak by winning the Premier 1 South Wales Doubles League for the third year running. This is complemented with the men’s second and fourth teams winning the Premier 3 and Division 4 East leagues respectively with the remaining four men’s teams retaining their league positions – meaning no Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club men’s team faced relegation.

The ladies’ teams saw similar success with the first team ending the season as winners of the Premier 1 division and continuing the consistent climb up the ladder was the club’s third team, who, following a seven year winning streak were finally promoted to Premier 1 after starting the league from the bottom.

John Williams, head coach of the club is thrilled with the club’s team and individual performances this year. He says: “2014 has been such a fantastic year for all of our players. As a club, we are continually striving to improve year on year and with the winter league having just started we hope to add to our list of achievements.”

The club now has 5 Licensed/Registered coaches and as well as continuing to improve the junior coaching programme, they have increased the number of coaching opportunities for adults with beginners coaching, cardio tennis, improvers coaching, doubles tactics and team practices.
